Before you arrive

Confirm the release first.

Contact the Property Custodian before traveling to the department. Property cannot be released until any investigative, court, ownership, or legal hold has been cleared.

Do not arrive without confirmation.Property may still be held for an investigation, prosecution, court order, ownership review, or another legal requirement.

    Contact DCPD Property & Evidence and confirm the property is eligible for release.

    Have the case or report number available when possible.

  3. 03

    Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and any requested proof of ownership.

  4. 04

    Arrive at the confirmed appointment time. Property is not released on a walk-in basis unless staff has approved it in advance.

Special circumstances

Some releases require more.

Contact property staff for case-specific instructions before making arrangements or traveling to the department.

Firearms

Firearm releases may require additional identity, ownership, eligibility, court, or background verification. Do not bring a weapon into the police lobby.

Evidence and investigative holds

Property connected to an active investigation, prosecution, appeal, or court order cannot be released until the responsible authority clears the hold.

Third-party pickup

A person collecting property for someone else may need written authorization, identification, and additional documentation approved before the appointment.

Large or oversized property

Call before arriving. Large, heavy, or bulky property may require special pickup arrangements, additional help, or a vehicle capable of safely transporting the item.

DCPD publishes only property information approved for public release. Evidence, victim information, investigative details, precise storage information, and other protected records are not displayed here.
